Booklist Spotlights Horror in Latest Issue

Booklist's August 2013 Cover
Timed perfectly with my completion of The Graveyard Book, the latest issue of the literary review publication Booklist spotlights the horror genre and provides some great recommendations for fans of frightening fiction. While not the entire issue is available online, the most interesting part is: the Top 10 List of titles in the genre that would appeal to young adults (most of the titles on the list are recommended for readers in grades 9-12, and a few are recommended for grades 8-11, so nearly all should appeal to those students who identified themselves as horror enthusiasts earlier this week).

For me, the most enticing title has to be Bonnie Shimko's You Know What You Have to Do, which appears last on the list. There's something terrifying about characters who don't understand that their actions are wrong—it creates a sort of tension that carries through the whole book, since, if the characters don't understand right from wrong, they might do something wrong at any moment.

Check out Booklist every month for great recommendations, top 10 lists, and interesting articles about books and authors. Each issue spotlights a different genre and provides a few extras related to it. You can likely track down the print edition by asking your local librarian.

Happy reading!
